front break shoe replacement on Series 3 SWB
« on: June 02, 2011, 11:06:00 PM »
Ah  >:(-what a frustrating evening I have just had being midged to death in Argyll dong what should have been a 60min job replacing the front break shoes on my SWB.
I was using "britpart" replacement shoes. Cleaned out the break drum etc etc. so everything should have been straight forward. Positioned the snail cam adjusters so it was backed off to the min etc. but when I put the wheel on the break just seized on solid and, with the snail cam already at minimum nothing left to back it off further. Double checked all the feet of the shoes sitting correctly in the pivots and expander etc etc. - but in the end had to dress the old shoes and put them back in.
Has anyone else had this problem when fitting new break shoes. I thought brit part bits were OK - do they sometimes get the tolerances wrong? - I could get the break to start binding if I pushed the drum centrally (not from the side) hard onto the hub, putting the wheel on and tightening up just replicated that but much more ie seized solid.
So sitting here scratching my head  ???- any ideas anyone?
Thanks
Stephen

Hi,
I no longer use Britpart in the workshop. The Britpart shoes are slightly too wide for the drum so when you tighten wheel nuts, the drum is nipped onto the shoes. Fit Bearmach or motor factor shoes and you will be fine.

second that, would never use brit part brakes, if you get them working you'll be only replacing them in six months.
Don't buy cheap brake parts as your life depends on them.
sorry for the bad news bin them now!

Thanks guys -a lesson learnt there - think I will be sending them back to the shop for a refund as they are not "fit for purpose"!

My front set, the linings start to crack and delaminate.
ye pay yer money.........................
i just feel that if you run single system brakes that all the components should be the best you can get get.
