Disco 2 auto clutch problems?
« on: November 14, 2010, 09:55:16 AM »
I assume the D2 auto has a clutch, seems I may have a problem as the sport/manual mode lights and the gear selected lights all started flashing and pulling away was real slow, even on 2000 revs. Any help appreciated

It has one way clutches, Sprag Clutch etc, but thats a different thing from clutches on a manual,
but they can & do go wrong.
Sadly so does the ECU & a variety of other small & big things.
Lets hope its just a minor thing.
So maybe best dont mess untill someone that knows diagnosis the fault.

I take it its just now in this colder weather. (or is the vehicle new to you?)

You have checked the fluid level & know how to check it?
Has it recently had the Fluid or strainer changed?
Cable checked & adjusted properly?

You may find the simple answer in FAQ's.
Maybe worth asking Geoff Butler at 'Charles Butler & son,Automatic Transmission specialist, Forfar' (behind Farmfoods)
to drive it & tell you the problem,
he has seen plenty of them.
Often he sees them before someone sells one on, (tells them what it will cost to fix)
then he sees it again with the new owner, when they find a fault.
so he already knows the problem. ;)

The lights mean you are in 'limp mode' which is why it feels very slow.  Usually switching off and on will cure this until it happens again.

Loom issues (oil or damage), FBW throttle, Gearbox ECU comms with main ECU and lastly a failed valve on the gearbox is the order I would be looking at it.

Cheers guys,I haven`t checked the fluid level as I`m unsure how and where!
I will try and limp it through to Mr Butler as you advise George.
As for switching off and on again, lights still flash as soon as ignition is swiched back on

The level check is the sump plug in the pan.
Which is where its filled at.

Awkward & Geoff will easily check it if the ramps are clear..
Best to have it plugged in & checked.

Hopefully 'much cheapness' if its just been lack of maintance in its previous history
& a strainer/fluid change is all it needs.
fingers crossed.

low oil in the gearbox is usually felt as a thump into 3rd, i.e. the gearbox does not do a nice smooth change but gets the oil into the piston (and clutch plates) the result is a massive jolt. the take off in 1st is also a bit weak. this happens without the warning lights coming on at all.

the warning lights in my experience happen due to electrical (or software) issues.
the main computer for the gearbox is under the passenger seat and is connected via a large multiplug connector, perhaps this has got some moisture in it?

sometimes as has been said above the software goes into confused mode, both lights flash and the gearbox goes into 3rd or 4th. switching off the engine ( and i usually have to take out the key for a short time) waiting for a few minutes then switching on reboots the system and lets the gearbox work normally. (dont know if noise on the system like lights getting switched on at the same time the key is being turned for the engine to start has any effect..)

the comms to the main ecu may also have a part to play since the flashing lights are controlled from there.

Got the motor back from butlers, got halfway home and the fault returned, got home shut it off, started it an hour or two later due to a family emergency and it was fine again. Today, the fault returns!!?? Whats going on???

The new selector switch needed a wee tweak, apparently it wasnt recognising which gear it was n.... so far, all is well
