Play in my transfer box output shaft. Bad or Really Bad?
« on: July 07, 2016, 10:16:00 PM »
Hello,

Had a bit of vibration for a while but noticed a new oil leak yesterday, coming from the front output of the transfer box (on my 300Tdi 110).
I gave the propshaft a wiggle and there is some play so I guess the bearing in there is on the way out.

Is this a transfer box off job to replace the bearing or can it be done in situ after removing the front prop?

Also, for info, I know it's not a Defender but a Disco transfer box which was put on for better motorway driving.... can't remember the proper 'code' for it...

Thanks in advance folks.

Mike.

yes you can change the front bearing with tthe box in place, there are videos on youtube how to do it, clean the transfer box and get the numbers from it with identify the bearings required

Mike, how bad is the play, "you gave the propshaft a wiggle and there is some play", you might want to check the prop UJ couplings before replacing the output shaft bearing, if the couplings are worn you get quite a bit of vibration and movement within the prop, easy job to replace the seal itself.

Hi Piper & Old Jock, yep, definately play in the output as the prop is quite new and you can see the output flage moving!
Gonna look into it this week once I've un-broken my wifes car!

Cheers!
