Defender grille and paint
« on: July 26, 2015, 11:55:11 AM »
Hi. My plastic grille and headlamp surrounds have seen better days. Considering spraying them. Anyone got a recommendation on paint type (or has anyone else done)?

Thanks, Alan.

Hi Alan

I've done mine with autocolour satin black a few times.  For a more long lasting solution I've also used Hammerite sating blacl (not ordinary matt or gloss)

If you pm me your e-mail address I'll send you a photo - also did the mirror arms and wiper arms

Use a plasticiser (plastic primer) first, it'll make the finish a little more robust

If you haven't already painted it, it may be worth trying to play a heat gun over the bare plastic finish. Apparently that 'brings out' the natural black in the plastic, a technique used by car valeters/detailers.

(Apologies to Duncan in advance...).  The 110 in the link, anyone know what the silver colour for the grille is called?  Thinking of going NAS.  Thanks, Alan.

I did mine couple of years ago with etch primer and then satin black aerosols. All still on now.

if your grill and surrounds havent been painted and are still black plastic then dont paint them unless you want them coloured, if you want to freshen up the black  then autoglym do a black dye aerosol that is fantastic , i used it on the headlamp surrounds , grill wheel arches mudflaps etc did a brill job costs about £6 a can
also good for tidying carpets in cars

I also heard that Cherry Blossom scuff repair works well and only costs about £2.00 per bottle. Not permanent, but easy to apply and redo as necessary.
