Coolant Question?
« on: September 10, 2013, 09:30:15 PM »
I've now completed my radiator & hose replacement.

Tomorrow I'll be putting the new coolant in, what's the best procedure to refill & bleed?

Cheers

It costs a bit more but have a look at the newish range of water-less coolants on the market. They are completely non-corrosive and should last the life of the engine.

They also boil at a much higher temp than water based coolants so the system is under less pressure (you can take the cap of at full temp and there is no explosive pressure release!!!).

Read a few reviews and they are always given full recommendations.

Finally got round to it tonight. Did a double flush but when I was putting water in to flush it I was only getting about 7.5 - 8 litres in out of a capacity of 11.8 so looks like there's still a fair bit in the block.

I know there's a drain plug near the turbo but DaveT has a point, it may have been in there without removal for 18 years, what's the chance of it shearing?

water less coolants have been around for more than 50 years .  United lubricants done one called FORLIFE with a change of colour if your head gasket went

I've already bought the coolant so I'll be sticking with that for the moment. Not going to put it in right away though as I've decided to change the heater matrix hoses as well. After looking at them they were in a poorer state than the rest.

As for the bleed nut I decided to, well after a bit of a debate with myself whether it was a good idea or not, to temp fate lol anyway the nut loosened no problem but I did squirt it with some WD40 first.

All is under control. I wouldn't miss MM for the world.

A few jobs have now dropped off though as I need to work bank holiday weekend :(
