MPG
« on: September 04, 2013, 09:43:38 PM »
Hi,

I have been forced to use my Defender ( 200tdi ) to get to work , about a 60 mile round trip, sitting carefully at 50mph, just done some calculations and i am getting 26MPG .

I know thats not why we have these wonderful vehicles but i was hoping for more , there was no city driving involved.

hopefully get a replacement car this weekend and i can get back to using Landie for what its meant for ,

donald.

That was with a very tired old low compression 3.5L v8.

The Newly rebuilt 3.9 should do much better! But the lack of MOT means I've not had a chance to find out yet.

Only properly measured once, took a trip tp Edinburgh and back. Average 27mpg. I took an empty trailer and came back with a mondeo estate on the back. Pretty good we thought. (110 TD5)

I'm happy with the 26 mpg and it has large chunky tyres which I don't thing will help, anyway I have just returned home with my new wheels , a 1992 Merc 190d , it managed 39 mpg so a bit better.

My previous Landy, a S3 88, with a 200di, averaged 36-37mpg.
The present wagon - a S3 109 station wagon with a 300tdi - recently managed an average of 33mpg over 1,000 miles.

That said, 25 years ago I had a Jaguar XJ-S V12 which managed about 8mpg if one was incautious with the throttle. Which I was. A lot.
So, don't get one of those.

Disco 200TDI, with roof tent and gentle foot, averaged 28 MPG, just staying in front of trucks on the motorway and some minor road work, from Edinburgh to the South of France and back, included four people and all their holiday kit.

Regularly does the same from Edinburgh to Hereford and back, not sure how much oil it also uses, not a lot or I would have remembered.

Much better than expected.

A good service makes a huge difference.

Was getting 18mpg brim to brim out of my 19j on my 60 mile commute at 55mph

Changed filters , engine , diff and box oil.

Was getting 28 brim to brim the following week on the same road at same speed.

Diesel Filter was full of red ......wonder how that got there. Wasnt me anyway :)
