Unable to select high range - help
« on: September 01, 2013, 06:32:48 PM »
Once back to the car park at Torphichen today I found I just could not select high range, the lever moved but would only go to neutral or low range. It had been getting more difficult to select high range for a while, long before my clutch problems, I was thinking it was just a wee adjustment of the linkage needed. It had been fine in high range all the way to Torphicen, and it is fine in low range and difflock low range, so its not a gearbox problem but transfer box. The lever is now really sloppy and won't even deselect low range.

Where do I start looking, at Ebay or is there a simple pin or something? Any advice greatfully received.

Oh and many thanks to Stephen O for the tow along the M8, it was screaming at 30 in low range, would have been terrifying doing that speed in all that traffic.

Dave. If the lever is flopping around not connected to anything then the wee clevis in the high low lever link will have broken. FRC8075 if I remember correctly!! (Sad, I know!). Lift the middle seat or cubby box and remove the middle seatbox lid. Easy to get from here. Just follow the lever link down to the box and you can't miss it.

Dave, it's not there its floppy, I had that before and have replaced it all. It's when moving it in the high low directions just didn't feel connected anymore

Dave, have had a similar problem with Ross M  transfer box, it would drop out of mesh then find its way in again, turned out to be a roll pin in the selector fork inside coming loose.Take the selector housing top off and look to see if the fork is actually moving the gear hub.

On a few other forums it has been suggested there is a grub screw on athe selector that comes loose, here's hoping.

Dave, thinking back, it was probably a grub screw, not a roll pin that had come loose, it meant the selector shaft was not moving  the selector fork.

So I've taken the tunnel out and the problem was immediately obvious, the linkage that goes from the selector lever to the selector shaft has broken beside the adjuster nut, it is quite narrow there.

This is right below the front edge of the seat box on the right hand side, you can see both parts hanging down here

and perhaps a little easier here

The offending article

This is the cover where the selector arm is, I needed to take it off to get to the clip holding the pin and also checked the grub screw I have heard so much about

This is the grub screw, nice and tight

and the hole where it fits on top of

Think its just age and use, causing fatigue on a fairly small piece of metal and eventually snaps. £15 for a new one from Lenny so quite relieved, and a whole £6 for a new drop ar ball joint.
