Overheating 300 Tdi
« on: August 16, 2013, 07:55:25 PM »
So, normally no problem, but a couple of times now when hauling trailers I've had the temp creep up to the bottom of "Red" on long inclines or steep hills. Happened last night on that steep hill a of miles south of Perth on the A9. Drops back quick enough on long down-hills or flats.

Its a standard 1996 300Tdi, with the viscous fan in its housing. Fluids topped up - took less than a cupful to top if it off today.

But... I've a winch on the front bumper and the number plate across the front grille above it. Is that going to be enough of a reduction in airflow to cause overheating ?

If so, any clever ideas on how to improve matters ?

Thanks.

I think its the original. Looks OK externally, not many damaged fins.

i agree with vag landy more often than not the rad looks good until you take it out and see its fubar'd, classic symtoms buddy get it before it gets your cylinder head gasket, also if its one of the brass radaitors get it recored cos the plastic ones only last a year or so, before they crack and you'l reuse your original,
the brass ones were always better, might be worth your while trying to get a loaner from someone on the forum whilst you get yours recored might save you some money,,

My dads 300tdi 110 looked okay from the front but when we removed the radiator after he had same symptoms. the fan side was missing loads of fins. I have always thought radiators had a life span of around 10 years.

Aye, as Dave says. The T peice below the expansion tank was slightly blocked. It was a guy round the corner who pointed me in that direction. But again it was after the gettin stuck in the big hole at Mudmaster last year so probably some mud in the radiator didn't help. I changed the thermostat at the same time.

Since then I only get issues on long days. The gauge goes up to about 3/4 and I just drop to 50mph, fan on full blast and it drops!

I'm buying a new radiator soon, was gonna go with the aluminium one, any thoughts?

I'm not sure if mines is original either but it doesn't look brass?

Good video, might be worth taking the radiator out and giving it a good clean. Might save me some cash.

I see he's put blue coolant in, mines is red. What's the difference??

The same guy does alot of paddocks products videos worth subscribing to. Dont know about coolant only ever came across green glycol and red organic acid. Red normally found on cars after 1998.  I would check with haynes for correct fluid type

1996 300Tdi, with the viscous fan in its housing.

Is the viscous coupling still working after all these years?

Seems to be. Vehicle runs fine 99% of the time, its just towing big trailers up big hills that causes the problem.
