Td5 temp gauge doing funny things
« on: July 01, 2013, 05:09:01 PM »
Saturday & Sunday the Defender started to play up. It's running fine with no warning lights, but the water temp dropped off the scale of cold. Pulled up and the gauge climbed back to normal. Noticed this happens whenever there is no load on the engine. I read somehwere that if the temp sensor is faulty ecu calculates the temp from the fuel cooler.  Could it be a faulty temp sender before I started buying parts in the hit & hope scenario?

Cheers Guys

Yep also noticed it changes when you apply handbrake. Strange as the handbrake switch needs to be fitted. But I guess it is movement in the seat box.

When it's stopped in traffic and the gauge is moving around, does the heater still blow hot?

It was hot at the weekend, so I couldn't say. Will check - what would it indicate?

you have a bad earth somewhere, run an earth from the ecu mounting plate to the neg on the battery & should cure it
Started out with nothing,
Still have most of it left

Head dowel failure failure - the head has shifted sideways and exhaust gas is getting into the coolant system. Check everything else first though as suggested by the others. If however the heater blows hot and cold all the time and/or the coolant system is pressurised even with a cold engine then that would be my next port of call. The engine won't overheat though so not an immediate risk in the short term.

I ran a cable from the earth ECU to the battery earth this morning. All ok on the way to work. Is that ecu earth just through the metal work of the seat box, there isn't an earth strap to the chassis, is there?

yeh the ecu is only earthed to the interior of the seatbox,
Started out with nothing,
Still have most of it left
