Fuel Tank Leak :(
« on: June 07, 2013, 09:58:03 PM »
As some of you will know I'm converting my Defender just now to a station wagon. Finally nearing the end and noticed tonight I have a fuel leak, the fuel is coming from the front of the tank behind the guard.

The only thing I can remember is cleaning it up to give it a coat of paint and I did scrape some dirt away from between the tank and guard so I'm assuming I've maybe scraped or punctured a rusty patch that's behind the guard :-\

Anybody had this, is it fixable or is it a new tank. Also I removed the tank when the body was off how easy is it to remove from below, it does have all new bolts so they shouldn't be a issue?

Cheers Stephen

Hi.  Had a very similar issue on my motorbike a few years back which was a pain.  I sourced a sealant which added to the empty tank, designed to harden and cover any pin-sized holes/leaks.  Tried that twice and did work however, fault recurred which prompted me to buy a new (£400!) tank.  That, of course, sorted matters.

Might be worth biting the bullet mate....

Alan.

Pressure washing my series was enough to justify a new tank. I'm pretty sure you can unbolt from underneath but remember to syphon it off first. I've heard of tanks being repaired but that depends on condition and location

Cheers guys

Tanks arn't that expensive from Paddocks its just the shopping list is already quite long and could be doin without it. Oh well, new tank it is.

I've had a look under Ruari hopefully a wee shoogle and it would come out, fingers crossed. There's hardly any fuel in it anyway as I had already emptied it to paint it.

£400? Ouch!

Cheers

Cool, is it still able to be fixed even though the leak is behind the tank guard?

There also used to be a place in south street that would fix fuel tanks.

Probably go with a new tank Dave.

Ok, need help. Attempted to remove the tank today from below. I can't get to the filler hose clips on the tank end or the breather pipe.

Are we saying if I get those off the tank will drop, I've taken out the bolts and disconnected the hoses etc from above. It has came loose obviously but it doesnt look lke there is enough room for it to drop but hard to tell as I can't get filler hose off?

Any help appreciated, very pissed off LR owner. Also wired up the rear lights today and can't get one of the indicators or fog/reverse light working :(

Well it turns out the Haynes Manual has details of how to remove the tank doh, didn't think to look.

Well, it turns out its wrong anyway, it states that you remove the chassis bracket, turn anti clockwise and presto. Rubbish, I had to remove the sill as well and take out the floor pan.

Brand new shiny tank fitted tonight  :D

Was planning to do more stuff over the weekend but the Paddocks order turned up today and half the stuff is on back order  :(
