Advice on Welding Chassis Please?
« on: February 27, 2013, 09:33:04 PM »
Lookin for a bit of advice.

I was down at Shugs today to get an inspection of the chassis as it requires some welding. The worst part is the cross member below, it's seems pretty solid in the middle but each end where it attaches the rest of the chassis needs attention.

Having look at Bill's its nowhere near as bad or DaveT's (thanks for the use of the photo Bill) but needs fixed before MOT!

What's the best way to go, weld it up or try and source the section and weld it in? Shug says both are possibilities but I think sourcing a section in good condition would be difficult unless anyone could help me out?

Any advice or help would be much appreciated?

Thanks Chaps.

you would be better to repair as you can fabricate the plates to your requierments and also strengthen chasis i do alot off welding to 4x4s found it better to  cut out as much rot as possible fabricate new parts and re  weld in on the crossmember you are showing in your picture

That chassis looks quite good to me lol.

Better to fabricate as this is a common problem with landies and it was straight forward enough to do.

Cheers Bill,

It's looking like that will be the only option as coming across the section I need will be very difficult!

Just a thought, If you look at a 300tdi disco chassis it uses a tubular section and does away with the bolt on brackets for the A frame..... That would give you the repair section and you could prep and clean it before fitting.
The other advantage would be the ability to check/repair the top of your chassis under where the old Xmember sat!

Cheers Bob,

I'm not sure of the differences with both chassis but I suppose anything is possible when welding. So if anyone can help with either chassis sections please give me a shout?

Cheers

Is it a coincidence, this was who I discovered my chassis was shot last year!

You've not given it to that cowboy welder ;D

Just take Shuggies advice, he's the one who needs to make the empty bean cans cover the holes. ;)

Yeah, but you appear to have just about fabricated a whole new chassis by the time you'd finished.
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

Yeah but considering who is driving it and his past record of breaking them its built to last with 4mm steel didn't want a shiny 2 mm one. This year I am going to reinforce the rest. At the end of the day its just tin.
