TD5 Sarter motor rebuild
« on: December 11, 2012, 01:09:48 PM »
Is it possile to replace the contacts on the TD5 defender starter solenoid without removing it from the car?
Access to remove the starter looks limited / awkward.
Has anyone replaced starter contacts before- is there any tricks or things to lookout for?

2 landys both off the road, bloody typical, just as the nights are long are roads are icy.

Ruari

I did my on my Disco 2 and it was a pure pig to get the starter out.  Found it dead easy once I broke my fingers, shaved bits off them and took loads of drink.

Seriously though, I used a good selection of good quality 3/8 drive sockets, extensions and swivel joints.  From recollection it would have been almost impossible to get the soleniod to split to be able to change the plunger.

Once on the bench the job was simple.  The hardest nut to get was the top one.  As they say "many TD5 starters don't have a top nut fittedar" - wonder why

Looks like sunday will be set aside for skinning my knuckles. Just hope no children are present   :P

I've read the topnut requires a 15mm socket and the bottom nuts use a 13mm socket, this in itself throw most people

Really - its only that top nut that's worst.  Just have patience and get comfortable.  Give the nuts a spray with WD40 a couple of days beforehand.

Ruari I done mine a few weeks ago out in the street. If you get the front end about 6-8 inches up on a few blocks etc it will give you enough elbow space etc. Just watch when you are removing the old contacts that you do not catch the thin copper wire from the trigger wire into the magnet coil that activates the plunger. I done this and spent mucho time soldering them back in place. Easy job really just make sure the contacts are sitting flat once you have tightened the nuts up. Buy the kit with a new plunger as well, not the cheaper ones with only the contacts. ebay address http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230856249280?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Parts arrived this afternoon, so I dog the rest of work in favour of some day light.
It was easier to remove the motor which was awkward. New contacts in and plunger fitted all back together and she fired up straight away.
