some questions re: 300tdi
« on: July 03, 2012, 09:02:05 AM »
1. Does any one know if you have to weld the disco engine mounts to the defender chassis when fitting the 300tdi?
2. Does the seat box have to be modified to fit the disco gear and transfer box?

yes you need to weld on the engine mounts .

and yes you need to modify seatbox as the gearlevers sit further towards the rear of car.

some people prefer this as its a nicer driving position.

hope this helps cheers Bill

Hi if fitting a 200tdi it does fit but use original 19j mounts also remember to use temp sender from 19j engine otherwise wrong reading at gauge.
it also fits defender box just check stod position .

Just to add what bill has already said.... If its a 19j ur replacing take the rear engine flywheel housing and fit to back of the 300tdi then ur gearbox if a lt77 will fit straight on in original stud position. You can do the same with the 200tdi. Means no work required on seatbox.

My mates and I have just completed a 300tdi conversion to my landrover 110
Agree with all posts above
I'd ask one question to anyone and that is how they think the exhaust should be handled.

We had to get fairly inventive!

What sort of Defender do you have, what age, what engine?

When it comes to the exhaust I know Steve parker do conversion for the 200tdi exhaust to mate up to the existing 2.5td exhaust system but they suggest getting the full system

We found that fitting a 300tdi exhaust onto the 110 was achievable using some 60mm (I/D) flexi exhaust from the down pipe to behind the gearbox mounting and also having to make new brackets as the mounting is different from the 2.5nad exhaust

I have a defender 90, 89 model with the 19j engine. I was thinking about fitting 300tdi, but I don't have the spare time to convert all the required jobs, plus my welding, leaves a lot to be desired!! So I thought that I would just fit the 200tdi as hopefully it will be easier?

I've heard that to get around the issue of the 200tdi exhaust, fit a 300 tdi turbo which moves the position of the downpipe so a 300tdi downpipe can be fitted straight on without fouwling or mods required. Also with the 300tdi turbo on the 2.5td exhaust goes straight on without mods but you may want to change the td exhaust at some point as the 300tdi has a bigger bore.

if that all made sence

When I put the 300tdi in the 110 I used a standard exaust  downpipe. The gearbox crossmember had a part cut out so the Exaust passed over the top like it should. The cutout section was welded shut with plate for mot reasons. Alternativly you can get the flatter gearbox crossmember fitted to factory vehicles with said engine. Reason I went down this route is apart from having to shorten the Exaust by cutting and welding its all standard so a damn sight cheaper to replace when the time comes. I run a single rear box. Its not loud .

used standard exhaust for 300tdi defender but cut some of downpipe before the gearbox cross member and used flexi pipe to get over the ceoss member - also had to make up some hangings for the exhaust from front to back as the mountings for a 2.5nad exhaust are very different !
