Trying to get gearbox back on after clutch change is it worth lessening engine mounts and trying to tilt engine to give more space at top of gearbox bellhousing. Cheers Folks

Stick your trolley jack with a bit of wood on it under the front of the sump and gently jack it up it should tilt the engine down at the back and  give you enough clearance for the top bolts.

200 or 300? (the balance point for the engine is different)

Anyway - the easiest way is to balance the gearbox on a single rope: it runs down the side of the box, between the box & the front prop flange, and loops round the main box to tie back on itself. The rope needs to be between the high-low lever and the main gearbox lever.

You need it to line up almost perfectly as the nose of the input shaft is a snug fit into a brass bush on the end of the crankshaft, the splines have to slide through the clutch-plate, and the locating dowels have to snick into their holes on the bell-housing. With practice, a 'box can be bolted up in 10 minutes of lifting it off the floor.

On the other hand, if things don't line up, you'll spend DAYS cursing the car, the 'box, the engine.... and the lack of competent help who are all OBVIOUSLY conspiring against you to stop it sliding home.
