my speedo stopped working the other day.  i have taken the dash baord apart and took the speedo out checked the connections and seemed fine, i also followed the cable to the gear box and all seemed in good condition. 
does anyone know what could be wrong? :/

Cable snapped internally ?

this happened to mine, the cable had snapped in the middle due to corrosion inside. Very easy to change

dont want to sound silly, but how do i change it? im abit of a novice on this kinda stuff to be honest.

If I remember correctly it unscrews from the speedo end and is held in place by a clamping plate at the back of the gearboxby the handbrake.

very easy, just remove the dash and unclip the speedo cable using a screwdriver on the gray clip, then feed the cable out bulkhead gromet. It passes through serveral clamps, mine were rusty so I just got the angle grinder and cut the cable in half and pulled hard! the other end goes onto the side of the gearbox near the cross member. Theres a plate with 3 screws that you remove then just pull out the cable.

Refitting is just the reverse, just make sure the square ends do infact slot right into the holes, a squirt of WD40 helps. You can pull about 4 inches of cable out the sleeve to help get it in the gearbox drive, then just feed it back in. Do the gearbox one first then feed the cable up through the engine compartment. You can use the orginal metal clamps or plastic tie wraps as I did. Line up the speedo end with the square hole in the back of the speedo and gently (don't force it) push the cable in till the clip clicks. If it's hard to do then the square end is not lined up properly.

well i have changed my cable, checked that the speedometer still works, using a drill, and been told, by a landrover specialists, that the drive within the gearbox 'nevers breaks' but yet my speedo is still not working...can anybody help me please?

you could leave it in 2wd, jack up a back wheel and run the car in gear (front wheels chocked), that way you should (with the cable disconnected from the gearbox) see the Speedo drive spinning, if not then I guess you are the first to have one break. If it is spinning then perhaps you didn't get the square drive to slot right in, I had to physically pull the cable out a bit and use pliers’ to push the cable end home on the gearbox.

i dont no if im wrong or not but i think my defender 90 is a permanent 4WD. 

i was warned bout the drive bit not being fully in so i made sure it was in the drive bit, so im prity confident that it is right in...i think.   
its been suggested that i wrap the cable drive bit in tape of sum sort (engineer/thread tape) to thicken it up as it could be too small and the drive bit in the gearbox might jst be spinning around and not catchin the cable drive. if u no wot i mean? is that a good idea?
