Rusty Disco!
« on: December 05, 2011, 07:27:13 PM »
Hi, I bought a disco about 2 months ago and love it. Only problem i had was a completely siezed difflock lever which involved a lot of swearing about 2 cans of releasing agent and center console completely dismantled to get to move. After this i was well chuffed with myself! Booked it in for its mot feeling confident it wouldn't need much to pass. Got a phone call today saying that it had failed on a load of welding. The point of this story is i was wondering if there is anywhere in the ayr area that does welding, preferably landy specialist, that can help me out.
Cheers,    Dave

Dave

how much is a load, if the rust has got a good grip it might be worth thinking about a new chassis.
depends on the rest of the car really, welcome to the world of rusty transport, why do we do it??

Not to sure on how bad the rust is but both arches and the boot had already been done but the boot needs re-done, both sills corroded too close to the seat belt anchor points, body mounts have excess rust, one body mount completely missing!?!?! So I would say there is a substantial amount of welding to be done! The guy it was one of his workers that did the mot and he is going to have a look tomorrow to see if he thinks its fixable or not! Just hope it is fixable because really don't want to get it rid of it just starting to enjoy it!

When I first bought my disco it was probably past economical repair - get yourself a welder and set about it, getting other people to weld them up just isn't economical.

I just did one sill recently, need to do the other at chrimbo:

Konads is a mate of mine, he gave me a hand doing the welding on my disco, which paled into insignificance compared to what he did to his! But hes right, we both did a welding course at night classes in a local college, cost about 140 quid or something, and now he has a decent mig welder. If it really is as bad as you say its sounds like it could be a couple of weeks work, the welding itself doesnt take long, its the prep and cutting out the old crap then making a decent patch! Get yourself on a course and get to it.
