p38 clonk while driving
« on: November 28, 2011, 08:47:14 PM »
Hi
have had a noise coming from my p38 while driving sounding like a flat tyre.
not very loud at first.
now very loud and drawing attention from people outside.
have now put off the road and checked props and uj both have no play.
turning wheels by hand not making noise.
but when i jacked up all wheels and put into gear i can hear the sound from rear axle.
was wondering if anyone could shed light on where my problem lies in the diff or half shafts ?.
Any info on checks to make would be great

thanks john

  • I'm not completely daft. Some pieces are missing.

John - P38 and a strange noise ? - It'll be the sound of your wallet hitting "empty" .

 :-(

If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

Gut instinct says it is a half-shaft judging by description. Put transmission brake on so prop doesn't turn, jack up one rear wheel and try to turn it by hand. If it spins then a shaft is broken? Others may have a better test.

Tried that and can't turn wheels unless both are of ground.
I was thinking it's a diff issues.
Rather than shafts but will drain off oil and see what I find in it tonight.

Well just to keep all my happy readers updated.

RR is now back up and running 5 teeth missing from the diff (nice) GEMM sorted me out with a replacement.

Fitted replaced seals and tested on short drive round block and no clonking Yipee.

Thanks George
