CB Radio / Swr meter
« on: November 18, 2011, 10:02:07 PM »

Just fitted a replacement aerial and trying to set up the cb with the SWR.
I was following this link - http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f38/swr-how-use-how-interpret-readings-109199.html
But when i'm all connected and tuen the Cal dial so the needle rads full, it doesnt get as far as that.
Does that mean my CB is duff?

Check the antenna lead for bad joints, corrosion or shorts ( try looking for a connection from inner to outer on the co-ax.)
Also make sure there is no damage to the co-ax and no sharp bends.
Remember to also check the patch leads on the swr meter, they have a habit of going duff.
Not knowing which swr meter you are using cannot help more.

Cheers tommy, it was a new cable with plugs soldered on, new antenna mount onto the same ground plate I used before.
No sharp bends that i can think off. I'll check resistance in the wire just in case thre is a short between inner & outer.
Not sure what types of Swr they were, but they both did have there own patch leads. They seem to both ork ok when we tried Shugs, incidentlly his readings were all well into the red, so guess there working ok. We were out today, and my mate did say he was reading me lound & clear, but never got much back from him.

thanks for input dave, i take it you go the shopping done - I guess you got steering parts on your santas list  :D
Could be worse, i'll send you a pic from today.  :-\

Ruari, Make sure the squelch is not too high, turn it right back to see if you are getting noise (QRM as its known) then see if it dissappears as you run it up.
If you get no noise then it looks like the RX side is goosed, might be able to fix it if you can drop it off, maybe Andy can leave it at Kip and I will collect

Will let you know Tommy.
I managed to pick up a spare CB with mag mounts. It's working ok, so I will try it in the landy with  the new aerial and take it from there.
