Non-Defender seats into a Defender...
« on: November 12, 2011, 05:45:36 PM »
Hello,

a quick question - my seats are completely knackered.  I recently got hold of a pair of Saab seats, previously fitted in a 90 - easy to fit, but I won't be able to get at the batteries or the ECU/fuses, as the seats don't have removable bases...

I can't think of a nice way of getting around this - I'm thinking of putting a couple of big bolts through the side of the passenger seat box (with insulating washers) and connected them +ve and -ve battery terminals, so I can still jump/be jumped if necessary, but to actually get at the batteries, I'd have to unbolt the seats.  I wondered if you could fix the seats in place with R-clips, but I don't suppose that's very safe...

Any thoughts would be much appreciated,

Thanks,

Paul

I had rover mg seats in my last 90, same problem as yourself, I just slid the seats right off the runners when I needed to get at the battery compartment. Not sure if it's viable for you to do that, just a suggestion.

I've never been able to get into my battery box as I've always had bucket seats... it's only 4 bolts and the seat is out so 10 mins would have you into the battery

you could put a deans plug (I think that's what it's called anyway) on the outside of the box. I have one on the race car to plug a full size battery into to get it started as the racing battery isn't actually big enough to start the car more than once!

Hi chaps,

thanks for your thoughts - I'd looked at Anderson plugs (I think they're the same as Dean Plugs...) as a possible solution...maybe that's the way to go...

Cheers,

Paul

I have a full set of original seat rails from my Ser2A which have had a frame welded to them to accept car seats, I also have the car seats, if you want them.
It might be possible to fit seats from a two door car which would allow access under the seats, I have done this in the past.

Anderson plugs, that's the ones! Damned if I could remember the name lol

The are FIA approved so you know they won't randomly catch fire

Thanks for your offer - as I already have the seats though, I'll stick with them and jam them in somehow :)

What happens when the scrutineer wants to check your battery brackets.  Do you have to remove the entire seat?

On mine you can still remove the battery box cover and have a peer in - you'd just have to have eensy weensy tiny hands to actually be able to connect anything !
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

a bit reckless (jamb them in somehow) what happens when you are in an accident the vehicle stops dead and you are as well when the seat  is still doing 60 mph :o

If the frames on the original seats are ok, then try the britpart seat retrim kit, dead easy to do and brings it back to an as new standard.  ;D

Unless it's an early RRC, the seat belt bolts to the body, not the seat. If you have an accident the seat plays no part in restaining you.
The seat should still be bolted in properly though, stops some comedian hiding it ;D
