After another trip of 346 deafening miles I've finally cracked. Ordered a 2m x 1m chunk of self-adhesive sound absorbent foam off tinternet. Plan is to stick it inside the hardtop - I've no headlining at all so its damn noisy.

I did that on my old 90. It was the stuff for putting down on van floors, Improved it a bit.
I also put some of the foam camping matts under the rubber matts in the front and that helped even more, in fact it was all very good that is until I changed the bushes on the front and rear axles to poly bushes then the noise level went up again.

I used 10mm draper camping mats and evo stick serious stuff ultra glue to get them up on the roof. Made a heck of a difference, specially in the rain.

It seems to have made a bit of a difference to the noise from the back. What I need to do now is the seatbox and the bonnet. I've seen a site selling the original plastic coated felt that was used on Series vehicles and in a range of colours, might try that for the seatbox and get some of the foil coated heat resistant stuff for under the bonnet.
