300 Tdi Vacuum pump oil leak
« on: October 29, 2011, 06:55:48 PM »
After months of an annoying but minor leak I think I've found it. By power washing the engine ( 300 Tdi 90) and then running it for 1/2 an hour I've spotted a leak from the bottom core plug/ welsh plug in the casing of the vacuum pump. Its been hard to find because the oil leaks onto the engine mount then drips onto the rotating UJ below and gets thrown alles uber der platz.

...anyway. Is there a way to stop the core plug leaking oil or is it a new vacuum pump time ? At the moment its probably loosing a litre of oil in 400 miles - but if the core plug goes I imagine it'll be nasty ?

Thoughts ?

Going up to Aberdeenshire tomorrow so as a temporary fix I've covered the edges of the welch plug with a smear of non-setting windscreen sealant. Dunno if that'll stop the leak or not.

If you don't hear from me for a while I'm stranded in a Forest, outside Huntly....  ;)

Hi Gene
Now im not sure how you can get the old one out as you certanly dont want to push it in the way. Maybe drilling through the centre and hooking it out or welding a rod or something to it might help. On fitting i used bearing lochtite.

Paddocks supplied the coreplugs i needed when i gave the disco engine a full going over befor the convertion. They were 50p each.

Hi Gene,

I have a vacuum pump still fitted to a 300tdi i removed from a defender. I know its second hand but all looks ok and it is dry.
I have a garage in Airdrie, you are more than welcome to take if you need.

That'll be a "Fail" then :-(  Still slowly leaking.

Still, having topped it up before I left the dip-stick is showing just below the top notch tonight, so its not as bad as it was.
