I used the original air filter, i extended the legs on the bracket so it sits as close to the washer bottle as poss. that way all the hoses i had in place for snorkel were shortened. cut the original inlet hose from the 300tdi and all looks pretty neat to be honest, better than my bob a job turbo hoses which i will have to source.

Any probs i can take some more photos of the set up and email them to you. Hope this helps

Cheers Bill

Nice to see patches of my "Halfords Blue" on the seatbox !

The "original" air filter was fitted by Lix Toll when they converted it to 200Tdi from a Td  ( It seized on a driving day at Coilantogle...)

The new fit looks a good job !

Ok temp gauge reads about a third of the way up cold. Any ideas how to remidy this or is it a faulty sender?

also kenlow lookalikey fan has packed up any ideas what electic fan fits a 200tdi rad as i am doing mud master and replacement fan wont turn up in time!!
Any help would be great

Thanks Bill

Bill

I've fitted two or 3 electric fans to Defenders/Series and just normally robbed them off anything lying around and run them off a switch and relay.  Difference was the temperature guages were normally working ok.  Could be the temperature sender in the 300 is either faulty or nat matched to the guage.  Does the 200 temp sender fit the 300 engine anywhere.

Is the fan triggered by the sender, might be the faulty sender not cutting the fan in, just a thought, I would confirm the fan works with a straight connection to the battery.

From experience: the temperature sender  and the temperature gauge have different "scales", comparing 300tdi and 200tdi.

In my case, I was able to sleeve a 300tdi sender into a 200tdi body to fit to my 200tdi engine in my 300tdi discovery (if you follow me)

Hi guys,
I have a 1989 Landrover 90 with an early Discovery 200tdi conversion and cannot get a temp sender that gives a proper reading at the gauge. It's a course threaded one and I recently read a topic on a forum ( might have been on here ) that quoted the sender to use in this conversion , I bought one but when fitted the gauge went right off the scale after a few miles.

Anyone know what switch I can buy that will give a lower/cooler reading,

I know that the engine is running at the normal temperature

Cheers

Hi Donald

Steve Parker Conversions do the proper sender for a 300 tdi into a 90 for just under £12.

I've just done a 300tdi into 90 conversion, and one of the last jobs is to get the temp guage to work right (do they ever) but before I splash out on a sender I'm going to try putting a variable resistor in line from Maplins £1.74.

They supplied one yesterday that looks basically like a volume switch.  I understand from other forums that you run the engine up to working temperature (at which point the gauge is reading off the scale) and adjust the resistor so the gauge reads where you want it to.  I'll give it a try and see what happens.   I'm not being tight - just want to find out whether this works or not.

I wonder if we panic too much as my wife's relatively new citroen doesn't have a gauge but there must be something else.

If our Citroen van is anything to go by, whatever it is will require removal of the gearbox via an access hole under the O/SR indicator, all to be done using a special W shaped screwdriver, while simultaneously typing a 17 digit alpha-numeric code into the radio....

Hi Duncan,

The resistor thing sound good, I will try and find one, I now have 3 temp switched 2 have the course thread that's fits my 200 TDI and one has fine threads , if I get the resistor thing to work I could send you my spare temp switched you could try ,

Cheers

Donald.

From experience with 200 <-> 300 tdis in discoveries: the 300tdi sender unit has a different curve to the 200tdi gauge
In was lucky, I was going 300 -> 200, so I could mangle a 200 sender unit body to act as a sleeve for a 300tdi sender unit.

I suspect you'll need to drill & tap to make a new hole to house the 200tdi sender unit.
