handbrake early 110

hi all am looking for idears/advice my handbrake wasent holding at all on my 1989 110 so i thought it would be simple job eg oil seal new shoes etc, but no it was siezd soild only getting 3 clicks and then no more so ive striped adjuster of and the freed them both off still no movement so i went to disconect the handbrake cable to see if it was that but thats ok so only bit left was the bracket that the cable attached to and that was it frozen soild with gunk/rust etc so 4 bolts to remove from gearbox simples me thinks but no first two bolts no probs but the two on side with spacers sherred off in gearbox  :'( so am looking for idears in how to solive this without removeing gearboxthe bolts have sherred clean in caseing any advice would be welcome  thanks dave

Hi 101splat,

you can't fix without dropping the transfer box, the bolt ends sound like they need drilled out and retapped, the clearance to the chassis is minimal there.

thanks stephen thats what a thought. just what i wanted to do spend all day removeing transfer box to dril/tap out two wee bolts  ??? , looks like ave got a little job to do soon   thanks again

Try picking up the backplate and cable for the later defender,the cable goes straight in to the operating lever through the rear of the backplate and no need for the bracket and linkage bolted onto the side of the transfer box.No need to drop the transfer box down, just the rear prop and drum to get into the backplate bolts. Did this on mine when I changed the gearbox and transfer box.

theres plenty folk on here breaking disco's take the whole drum back plate etc and swap it across, handbrake cable is much easier to adjust as well, i think the handbrake lever can be retained but don't quote me on that one i cant remember

thanks guys ill get disco handbrake assy and try that a got prices for x disc handbrake kit so thats not a opition i want to do ,so will try easy fix first without removeing transfer box   thanks again dave
