« on: July 14, 2011, 07:57:39 AM »
when i try to turn off my engine with the key it doesnt turn off. the key starts the engine no problem.    the ignition, dashboard lights etc all turn off, and i can fully remove the key from the barrel when i turn my key 'off', but the engine keeps on ticking over.  is this a big problem? :/ ive got an MOT coming up and needing to do something about it. can anybody help me please? :)

thanks

Is it a diesel ? There is a solenoid operated fuel cut off that basically drops a plunger into the fuel pipework to stop fuel flowing to the engine when the ignition is turned off - could that be stuck ?
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

I had the same problem with 1.25 volts still running through circuit when ignition was off. i put a relay in line to the solenoid and that cured it.

Hope this helps.

Could be dirt in the contacts on the end of the ignition barrel keeping the feed live to the solenoid.
