Fuel econemy on the tdi engines.
« on: June 06, 2011, 08:10:35 PM »
Been useing my green 200tdi daily for work and domestic dutys and damn impressed with its milage capabilitys.
I tend to just brim the tank these days. Last full tank fuel right up the filler neck i managed 567 miles... not bad for a house on wheels.
Not tested the 300tdi yet.
I do tend to drive very carefully in the past compared to the chauffuer in the film driving mrs daisy  ;D

damn - that IS good!
(chunky tyres, a heavy right foot, and an abused engine.... and I struggle to get over 400 miles to a tank!)

Think the tyres i use have alot to do with it they have a road pattern. General grabber TR im sure they are.

pure road tyres make a huge difference , my td5 disco has 18" pure rd tyres or 16" full mud terrains , the difference is about 90-100 miles on a tank
the 110 runs fully loaded with heavy winches front and back on 265 muds the fuel on that is horrendous but goes with the right foot treatment it gets as it has a disco transfer box which is a bit much for it with the big tyres
roof rack makes a big difference too

Know what you mean about the disco transfer box both the 110 run them and certanly with the 200tdi it needs the lead foot treatment on lift off otherwise im fairly gentle how i drive. I do like the road tyres i got alot more confidence with them especially on wet roads. The other boat has insa turbos on its a racket and their not the safest in wet conditions saying that they aint unpredictable. Not fitted my winch yet thing weighs a ton and this keeps putting me off aswell as do i actually need it.
Let you know how the 300 does if i can behave in it enough to drive steady  ;D

Tested the 300tdi 110 at the wkend on a full tank.Old girl managed 315 miles so far down to half a tank now. Some of that was offroad at an eventat the wkend  for about 15 miles in total. Not too bad .

About the same as mine - I work on getting 280 - considerably smaller tank than a 110 tho.  ( 45lt plays 70lt from memory ?)
At 280 to the tank thats a rough average of 28 mpg, which I think is acceptable.
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

Did about 400 miles on ?98 diesel at ?1.39 a litre and that included off road in crawl mode and idling plus a lot of rural driving up around Aviemore on single track roads.

Not too sure how that stacks up but the 6 speed box is very helpful anything over 40mph is 6 gear unless you hit an incline.

6mpg thirsty motoring ;D.
I never really thought the landys were all that bad to be honest even my old trusty 19j done failry well. Only thing ive changed latly is my driving so that i dont drive fast now i have the power from the engines or it would throw my fuel saving out the window. Saying that did give the 300tdi  110 the beans coming home from new galloway at the wkend ;D

I suppose if i removed the external rollcage, winch, and removed the 35 inch mts changing them for slightly more road bias ones then I may well push above the 300 mile mark.

My 200Di 2a will do around 35mpg, which was a distinct improvement on my old 2 1/4 petrol with the added thrill of feeling like your breaking the sound barrier while doing a high speed (70mph) motorway cruise.
