Chassis ID query....

Hi folks

Needing to pick some brains, I can get a secondhand chassis for a S3 in good nick for not much money. The guy bought a new chassis before realising the existing wasn't as bad as he thought! His new chassis from Richanrds doesn't have any ID on it apparently. What I am wondering is if I buy the secondhand one, what will that mean for getting the thing licensed? Is it Q plate territory or otherwise?

Any help appreciated!

at the bottom of the page is a link to the DVLA site,
& links to registering a 'Rebuild'
& all the other interesting bits.
It clearly tells you about using a used chassis for a re-build. :(
You can do it, BUT.
IVA is ?450 min.

A chassis number can be lost to rust, then repaired with new dumb iron or patched over in its lifetime, so no Q plate.
Just don't tell anyone and we'll keep your secret for the price of a pint.

If you start a thread, can you not also delete it?

There are lots of places who make money out of replacing chassis with new ones and the owners don't end up with a Q plate so it can be done but I think it depends on how many main components are retained from the original vehicle. Ask Strathearn Eng. as they should know.

I made a point of asking my MOT garage prior to getting a new chassis. Their line was that the only number they look at on an LR is the one on the vin plate but if they found another different number elsewhere there would be issues with DVLA - a counter "ringing" thing - so OK with a Galv new chassis, problems if sticking a good (and therefore legible) chassis under another body.

 The system works on a points basis but if you use a secondhand chassis/bodyshell then you will wind up with a "Q" plate. The DVLA website gives good advice and you can obtain a leaflet from any DVLA office or their head shed. There are many "Free Road Tax" vehicles going about which are in fact illegal. If the ID is incorrect then the registration is not legal therefore the insurance, MOT etc is also not legal. People think they have pulled a fast one on the system claiming pre 73 reg to get free road tax. DO NOT BE FOOLED! The DVLA will not take kindly to the stunt. You could end up losing the vehicle & your driving licence.
 So basically a new chassis plus the original axles, engine or transmission and steering should allow you to keep the original registration. I have dealt with vehicles where the owner tried to convince the system that a Range Rover chassis & axles etc with a 1960's 88 body was entitled to the registration for the 88. They were not successfull! Resulting in a Q plate and a slap on the wrist from Mr DVLA. Once the Reg is gone it is gone.

even flicking through ebay last night there was quite a few 'classic tax free' with defender front ends, coil springs, single piece windscreens, wheel arch eyebrows etc etc......registered in 1960/early 70s so theres obviously plenty suspicious motors going about. if you dont do it above board then sods law you'd be the one caught, fined etc. maybe safer taking this to the dvla direct and get them to write thier answers down so you have proof what they say. folk have rebuilt motors to have them declared ilegal so wasted thier time. read in landrover owner recently about a guy that rechassied a damaged disco3 and had to start again cause he didnt do it right

Not trying to do this underhand by any means, that's why I asked! Will need to look into it with the DVLA I guess.
Has anyone got/running a vehicle on a Q plate? Are they much of a problem?

They are not problem in anyway.
In fact they are a vehicle thats had at least one extra inspection,
which is a bit more involved than a MOT.

Some Insurance companies didnt want to cover them in the past.
Plenty of brokers & insurers have no problems now in geting you cover.

If you are going to the bother & expense of a build & having it inspected,
is it not worth spending the few extra hundred pounds to do the build on a brand new chassis.
Seems to me like a saving in the long run.

Hi George

If I could afford ?1300 of galv chassis I would do it, but for a weekend toy it is far more than I can afford! I am just looking to make a solid vehicle rather than a full rebuild. Through a deal I can get bodywork and running gear minus an engine for nowt so there is a real chance of a ?500 series landy!!

Will look into the insurance thanks for the link :)

I understand that, & i love 'much cheapness'
But if its going to require a IVA & a Mot,
 then thats a ?1000 plus landy.
Not all 'new chassis' need to be galvanised or cost ?1300.
The important thing is reciepts, invoices & pictures of the parts & the build.
All stuff the DVLA love. The Dundee office is very helpful.
have fun with it tho.
