Series III swivels - oil or grease
« on: June 02, 2010, 10:20:00 PM »
Should I use oil or one shot grease in the swivels of my Series III?

One side needs a new swivel, as it is corroded & leaking a bit at the moment, and the other side will need doing soon.

A workshop section of an early edition of LRO suggested one shot grease is not suitable for Series motors, but looking at other forums there seems to be mixed views.

Paddocks also sell one shot grease in their "Series - Axle" section.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
Clive

Hi Clive,

I've run mine with one shot grease since I rebuilt it 5 years ago and I have not encountered any problems with it.

Cheers

Don't think there should be a problem, the grease thins out when warm. Also it will not leak so readily as EP90 :D If there is minor pitting on the "good" swivel you could smooth it off with wet and dry and brake cleaner. Worked OK for my car!

Remember to reset the swivel preloads with a spring balance ;)

Its designed for oil but lets be pragmatic, any lubricant is better than no lubricant!

If your swivels are leaking and there is a risk of the top bush running dry then grease them and leave it alone for a while.

If you have just rebuilt them and they are all A1 then oil them.

If you have freewheeling hubs then run with them locked every now and then to keep the top bush lubricated.
