at your age insurance is bad enough, thats why some folk suggested leaving your motor standard.
take it you done the engine swap etc yourself? did a qualified garage/mechanic work with you?
my 90 has a tdi conversion and again so many insurance companies were not interested (i have been driving 15 years, no claims, clean licence) but i got in touch with adrian flux. thier conditions were i had to provide details and qualifications of who did the swap (which i couldnt because it was done before i bought it) so  instead i got a mechanic to check it and write a report on headed paper to say it was done right etc. made almost no diference to my premium but as im an old fogey it doesnt have as much effect, cant say it will be as easy for a youngster

try the landrover specialists in landrover magazine. adrian flux, sureterm, lancaster etc. doubt the mainline companies would be interested once its modified.
what ever you do DONT try to get around it by not telling insurance about changes, its not worth the risk should the worst happen

good luck and please tell us how you get on, theres a few youngsters that will soon be coming of age so am sure they would appreciate knowing what they can expect

I take it then there are people that are prepared to quote you on a standard 4x4!
What is it you are trying to insure?
How much do they want to cover you for an un-modified vehicle ??

In my experience of insuring family members the price for a new driver started at ?1400 for an ordinary small vehicle
& it cost around ?950 to have them on my insurance for driving a small 4x4.

That didnt even allow a 21 year old to drive a winch equiped jimny.

One company that did entertain young drivers for 4x4's was
www.footmanjames.co.uk

Young drivers got reasonable cover with
www.premiumchoice.co.uk
sadly now not providing 4x4 cover to young drivers.

Another company that quotes for young/inexperienced drivers is
www.endsleigh.co.uk

Let us know how it goes,
i feel you are on a hiding to nothing,
I hear of new drivers paying ?2500 to be covered for slightly modified land rovers
that are in their own name.
But then you have to take that with a pinch of salt.

I do know a young guy that pays ?60 a week for his insurance.

all the best

I have a 20 Year old daughter who has been driving Land Rovers since she was 15, she borrowed mine while her vehicle was in the repair shop and it was ?22 per week extra on top of the premium for her wee peugot roller skate.

As you may have seen I am selling my 90 and the youngster would love to have it but the costs of running and insurance even with her Police discounts is way too much.

I suggest that you may wish to get the vehicle insured under your parents name and add you as an additional driver.

Also as you have not sat the driving test yet, it may be best concentrating on that for the moment.

Good luck what ever you do.

even if your parents dont drive, get them to apply for provisional licence then add them to insurance. i use 'go compare.com' ok most companies wont touch your modified motor but it gives a starting point. do you on your own, then try adding parents etc and see what diference it makes.
i use go compare, ok leaving motor standard, then add on 20 year old friends as provisional drivers etc, then try same person as qualified driver on my policy, then with same person on thier own policy. it helps see where the premium starts to shoot up.

youngsters get hammered. i had a mate years ago bought an old capri for ?300 (think he was about 20 at the time. cheapest policy was ?3000 and they wonder why youngsters take a stupid chance and run without insurance?

If taking out a policy in your own name, which it will have to be if you are the registered keeper.

An experienced female driver,
with her own vehicle with an insurance policy is the cheapest named driver
to have.
Mum, aunty, sister etc.
Low risk job etc, use of other vehicles etc

Not 2 named drivers other than yourself.
that is more expensive, father & mother, costs more than just father or mother.

More than 2 drivers on a policy is almost always more expensive.
A father or someone with their own policy is cheaper than a mother thats only a named driver on her partners policy.

Parking on a drive is not always cheaper than on the road.
Garaged should be cheaper, not always tho in a bad/high risk area.
It depends on the post code/area etc.

(reasoning on driveways is, more higher cost claims etc comes from driveway theft, roof damage falling slates etc,
Range Rover Sports etc, seem to have bigger claims when parked on drives thsan on roads,
I dont believe it, but a close relative/insurance broker tells me.)

I know i live in a high risk area, doing online comparisons can show the difference on annual milage, place parked etc, its not till you get the real quote that you find out.
REMEMBER YOUR QUOTES & THE INFORMATION YOU GIVE IS BEING SHARED BETWEEN INSURANCE GROUPS< GET QUOTES ON DIFFERENT VEHICLES< BUT BE VERY TRUTHFUL ON YOUR PERSONAL DETAILS>
They do sell insurance, if you lie, it may not be valid tho.

Your dad can probably drive your vehicle from his own policy with 3rd party cover.
so not nessecary to name as a driver, if you have someone else to preduce your premium.

If you are tempted to have someone else insure your car & be a named driver.
Remember the down side.

Unless you are a named driver noted as being a regular driver, you may have problems as a driver everyday, college/work etc.
If you keep the vehicle at another address all week, say Inverness, & you have it stolen, the company is not stupid.
They check the Main Insured driver & the youngster thgat really owns it and drives.

They ask for petrol reciepts etc & look at the other Insured drivers milage etc.

I know because my son caused me insurance hassel twice crashing cars i insured for him.
Made the mistake also of letting family drive on a trade policy.
never again.

When i was looking at first getting a land rover, 17(oh so many years a go now :'( ) most companies wouldnt touch me if i was going to modify the car in ANY way. be it winches, engines, tyres or even puting on a ROLLCAGE.

best idea is to get a landie and and work your way through the insurance pages.

Not really a cheap way round the issue. I have been driving for 10 years ans started off with Astra 1.7TDI, 5 years old, ?1700 TPFT.

The issue does not go away much when until you reach 21, lower again at 25.

If I was in your shoes I would look at insuring the car under your mum, dad, uncle, aunties name with you as a second driver.

Try and pick an insurance company that allows named drivers to build a NCB, thats the cheapest way to get on the right rd to having yur own policy. Admiral multi wold be an option, you can build a NCB as a second driver, dircet line offer this I think.

direct line offer it, but there is a big possibility that since the car is modified(i had a big argument with them over changing from a standard petrol engine to a standard diesel(ie a 2.25 s3 petrol to a 2.25N/A s3 diesel) as they said it was modifying it 'from a standard spec')

Terry, my first car, after passing my test at 17, was a 1971 Triumph Herald, and before you say it, i know its NOT a Landie, but even then (1990), with a standard 1300 engine, my insurance was high.

My parents insured it for me, with me as a named driver for a year. Still expensive but gave me time to save up enough to pay for my own insurance.

As youve not passed your test yet, id go with what some other folk have been kind enough to suggest, and ask your folks to insure it, with you as a named driver, taking into consideration, i guess, that you'll also be learning to drive in it, with which you'll need an additional full licensed driver anyway.

The other thing to consider, is to shop around for a collectors car policy-depending on the year of your Landie. I had one on my Herald at 18yo. There are normally restrictions such as limited mileage etc and some wont insure under 25's. Some specialist companies may offer it, but even with restrictions, if it helps to bring your policy premium down for a few years, its worth exploring, to see whats available.

Good luck. :)

Best thing is to start with a standard motor. Then upgrade once you get a few years on your license, it makes a difference!

dihatsu engine?? this isnt your tdi conversion then?
hate to say that could prove even worse. sensible insurance companies (adrian flux etc) realise a tdi is simply a newer version of what was already in. start putting in engines from other manufacturers and its a whole new ball game.
