How do you know what steering box you have??

How do you know what steering box you have??

Ok guys really showing my ignorance but i am about to buy a repair kit for my steering box on a 1984 110 but need to identify 3/4 or 6 bolt!!! is it as easy as looking down on it and seeing how many bolts on the top or is it more complex???

Any help greatfully recieved as usuall

Hi Bill , you got it in one . Its the numer of bolts that hold the top cover on the box itself . Easily seen when you look down onto it from the engine bay .

I know its probably cheaper to renew the seals but are there not some fancy tools needed like a press or something like that.

I thought about it for the 90 but in the end I got a recon for ?200 but got ?100 back when I posted back the duff one. It comes with a 12 month warranty. Just a thought.

I did the same with my RRC one when it was knacked. Very often new seals will not fix leaks by themselves.

The wear is usually in the shaft, hence why the seals don't work.  You can pick good dry boxes up from eBay or buy the ?200 recon ones from your local independant.  Some recon boxes are better than others though - the cheapest ones don't last very long if you are REALLY using your Land Rover!

If it's a minor weep rather than a dripping leak sometimes seal conditioner can sort it out (for a short while. . .)

I have a really good box for sale ?125..It is as new when i got the disco it still had the sticker on it. its a four bolt with the bottom arm still on. I know a man with the special tool to fit your bottom arm at a small fee..
