Alternator failure?? 300tdi...
« on: October 22, 2022, 03:57:39 PM »
Hi All,

For a good while now, occasiinally at night, I'd notice the battery warning glowing dimly. It was so dim it's only at night you'd see it. It would go off after few minutes.
Today I drove to the shops, no problems, but on re-starting the light was on, got brighter when anything electrical was switched on and then flashed steadily whilst driving.

Battery is new, and all earths are good as I re did them all and added more when I replaced the bulkhead 4 years ago.

Thinking I'll check & clean all the connections on the alternator first... then see.

It's the flashing warning light that intrigues me. Is there a capacitor on the alt that is charging and discharging regularly to cause this...

Any ideas appreciated.

Mike

Sounds like low output from the alternator.
Go to Screwfix and buy a multimeter item code 75337 for £8.24. An absolute bargain.
Stick the leads on your battery and start the engine.
If the voltage doesn't go up its your alternator. Simpy pimpy!
(Or the fan belts loose).
