Boundaries & Live Canes

The only acceptable marker for any form of Boundary is a set of cross canes.   No other marker or physical feature can be used to indicate a boundary.   After the course is built, only the Clerk of Course can add additional boundaries at their discretion and these must be marked with a set of cross canes.   If any such additional boundaries are added then all drivers must be informed by the CoC via the Start marshal on the Start Line before they start their drive.   Boundaries and their use is well documented in the ALRC Handbook, which culminates in the helpful diagram, Sketch H on page 71 of the current 2021 Handbook.   This shows that a boundary is a curved line, going from the outside of the previous gate, through the crossed canes, to the outside of the next gate.

All canes are live on a section.   Whether a set of gates has already been driven through, or is still to be driven through later in the sequence, hitting any cane on course will incur a penalty.    Should the design of the course allow you to pass through a gate out of sequence, this is acceptable as long as no cane is hit in the process.   ALRC Handbook (2021 version) calls out hitting ANY cane in section 11, page 67, 3.1 on page 68 confirms a zero score is awarded without hitting a cane, and 4.1 again awards a clear if you cross the finish line without hitting any canes.   The Motorsport UK Year Book gives the same rule in Section P : 42.5.2.

Should you require any further clarification please contact any committee member who can assist.

Take care, and hope to see you out there soon,

Dean
