Does it need to be a v8 gearbox or would an r380 from a tdi do ?

Hi,
Discovery 1, 3.9 V8 manual.
Complete vehicle being broken.
89,000 miles.
Gearbox, £400. Can be tried in car.
Breaking next week.
All other parts available.
