300Tdi Oil leak
« on: September 06, 2020, 09:56:08 AM »
Hello,

I've just started to have an oil leak at the front of my sump. I assumed it was the seal between the sump & engine but after cleaning it all up it looks like it's coming from the threaded hole between the front of the sump and the pulley.

I've looked at engine diagrams & my LR 300Tdi maintenance book but I can't find reference to this hole... Is it a wading hole? Should it have a plug in it? I've never really noticed it before, but then I've not been looking at it.

Any advice appreciated!

Mike

Looking into it a bit more, is it a timing housing oil seal failure of some kind?
The crank pulley also has a slight wobble to it when running, which it's had for a while now, bu tcould this be the cause of a bigger oil leak?...

It will be your inner crank seal that's leaking ,timing cover and cam belt will need to come off to sort it
As for the crank pulley wobble perhaps you need a replacement pulley too

Hi Chris,

Yeah, I think you're right.
It's not had a new timing belt in the 10 years the 300tdi's been in the motor, so I've booked it into Strathearn for this to all be sorted and generally give the engine a good '10 year' service whilst it's there.

Cheers!
