td5 tuning
« on: December 01, 2016, 09:14:18 AM »
needing a bit more oomph from my defender for towing etc. Looking at uprating intercooler , remap and maybe even variable turbo. It looks like a bit of a minefield so anybody got any recommendations ?

eg some of the "performance intercoolers" look standard size and I would have though they would need to be bigger to be more efficient ???

happy to bolt on bits myself but who have you used for remaps etc ???

Any advice gratefully received

Gary at Alive tuning and Daniel at Storm tuning are probably your best bet for the TD5. They are highly regarded in the D2 TD5 remap scene

Having seen first hand some of the work from other Td5 tuning companies and also the resultant failures of clutches and head gaskets then some pre remap work would be beneficial. For my money I don't like the way Alive tuning remaps operate on the cars I have driven, delayed boost then a massive hit of torque which is all a placebo of a power increase, a good remap should be smooth and predicatable not with big spikes of power.

If it were my car I would fit a new headgasket with steel dowels not the plastic LR ones.
Have all the injectors checked and or replaced (its a big outlay if all are faulty but cheaper than a new engine, plus any tuning work is a waste of money if the injectors are not 100%, its a more common fault than people realise). Also check the injector loom for oil ingress.
Fit a new water pump, thermostat and if in any doubt a new radiator as well.

After that, work from the bottom up, silicon hoses, intercooler, then a vari van turbo if you want. Then remap.

Speak to Pete Bell at Bell Auto Services, you wont be disappointed IMO.

Sound advice from rangerovering, remember and include a brake overhall, the faster you go the quicker you need to stop. Have fun, safely.

Aye George

Your right of course but it's the bits that keep going when others have stopped thats the problem  ;), I meant to say in the earlier post, check your turbo actuator isn't seized, I had a TD5 that wasn't going too well and fixing that along with a new mass air flow sensor fixed made a huge difference,

Wouldn't have anyone other than Gary @ Alive map my cars

He has done my Disco 3, the wife's Freelander 2 and will be doing my Td5 Defender early next year  8)
