Td5 Discovery, poor starting
« on: March 03, 2016, 09:48:56 PM »
My brothers' 2002 Td5 Discovery was treated to a new fuel filter last weekend.  After fitting the filter it wouldn't start. Cranked over fine, almost, very nearly firing with intermittent clouds of white smoke but eventually draining the battery.  Put the battery on charge for a while and gave it a quick squirt of Easy Start and it fired up fine.

Since then it will not fire up if left overnight, unless it gets a shot of dynamite down the intake. Once running it will start and stop fine.

I am thinking of an air leak in the fuel, possibly from the new filter. Anyone any other bright ideas, before I head back over to see him this weekend

Sounds like air getting in somewhere and letting the fuel drain back to the tank. Look up the self priming procedure for the pump on google, try it and see if she fires up without the easy start.

Check the condition of the filter head and connections at it - they corrode badly.  When you disturb the filter, sometimes it causes the pipes to loosen.  Also check the pipes on top of tank as they tend to leak.  If they chaffe through as well as leaking, they can draw air

There is also a one way valve in one of the conecting outlets on the filter head if that makes sense. Maybe its not one way now. Easy to check. Just remove and blow through them. If the green pipe rubs through youll know all about it. Maybe try on D2boysclub.co.uk as there is a wealth of knowledge there as its a one marque club
