Vacuum pump on 2.4 TDCI
« on: September 25, 2015, 10:22:33 PM »
A cautionary tale Ref 2.4 TDCI engines!

Thankfully I routinely check my oil levels etc (thanks to military trng.) I noticed during my "First use checks" that there was oil starting to spray onto the under-bonnet area. A clean down & inspection indicated that the vacuum pump for the brake system was leaking oil @ the spindle & this oil was being blown over the engine, the exhaust manifold etc. This pump is fed from the main engine oil system presenting danger of loss of engine oil plus danger of fire.
The cure was to fit a new pump, not cheap but better than an engine failure or a fire. My friendly local L/R  specialist informed me that these pumps are known to fail & if not spotted in time the results can be expensive! Reminds me that an ounce of prevention is worth a CWT of cure.

As you have found out, it is a known issue

You will be pleased to hear the new pump comes with a much improved seal, to prevent similar failures in the future :)
