Oxidising paint
« on: June 08, 2015, 11:07:53 PM »
Hi.

Recently bought a 02 Defender and not surprisingly, some paint away in places and the odd bit of bubbling.  Conscious if I keep the motor for years, in leaves I'll end up with holes.  Worth sorting now and if so, what's the thoughts on treatment (if at all possible, of course).

Thanks, Alan.

On steel I always clean it back to shiny and then use etch primer before top colour . It lasts much longer than red oxide. On aluminium, if there is galvanic reaction you need to stop that happening first or no matter the paint it will bubble quickly after repair. I use an old screen wash bottle to cut a gasket to slip in between the steel/alu. Then shine the alu and etch prime again. If it's hard to get to then ku rust or any other of those chemicals that react and turn black can make the repair last longer. They have to be covered over with paint though cos they are water based and not waterproof. I use good old etch primer again for that.
