It's been absolutely fine for the last two years until tonight when I needed towed home! All filters were replaced about three months ago, new lift pump last year (2013). Engine is standard 300tdi 1995.

Engine died on way home from work at a roundabout, restarted OK and managed another 5 miles on fast roads before cutting out again when I slowed at a junction. Resarted with a bit of cranking but got progressively worse, finally only managing 20metres between each time it stopped. Daughter No1 highly amused by all of this! Now won't even run long enough to move it in the drive in low box. Ticks over but as soon as any load it cuts out.

Thinking it must be fuel related, lift pump failure? dodgy filter? Working tomorrow but will test lift pump and try new filter on Monday in the daylight.

Is there something else I am missing?

certainly sounds fuel related, i would check for water in the fuel filter first, then has the sedimenter at the back been checked, it may be blocked above the back axle, then check for leaks/ air getting in

No sedimentor on my 90, don't think it has ever had one?

Lift pump appeared OK so changed filter and then put in a jerry can of fresh fuel, no obvious rubbish or water came out of filter though.

Appears right as rain now, long may that last.
