Series 3 Inertia seat belt installation
« on: October 24, 2014, 02:55:27 PM »
Hi,

I recently purchased inertia reel seat belts from Paddocks for my Series 3.
I'm trying to fit them but can't figure out where the inertia reel should mount. :P
The logical place it would fit it fouls the seat backs. Seats are standard.
Can anyone who's fitted these maybe post some photos of where they are fitted.
Thank you.

Do you have a soft top or a hard top?

If a soft top, you can't really fit inertia belts as you can't get the top mount high enough unless you use one of the after market mounting frames
like the Exmoor Trim one here http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/store/defender-products/seat-belts/soft-top-front-seat-belt-bar-detail.html

If a hard top then you need to mount the reels about the top of the bulkhead like in the Exmoor Trim pictures on the above link.
The top mounts go on brackets that run from the roof to side joint diagonally to the door shut
like these http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/store/defender-products/seat-belts/top-mounting-bracket-detail.html
Part numbers

ADU710100 - Hardtop Corner Bracket - RH http://www.paddockspares.com/adu710100-hardtop-corner-bracket-rh.html
ADU710110 - Hardtop Corner Bracket - LH http://www.paddockspares.com/adu710110-hardtop-corner-bracket-lh.html
Paddock price £4.30 (exc.VAT) £5.16 (inc.VAT) each

For the Hard Top there is also a bracket designed to fit the reel and the top mount on one bracket that fits between the roof to side joint and the tub to side joint.
These are part number 395240 but no-one seems to have them in stock.

You can get these brackets from other suppliers as well .

Mine are mounted on the rear side of the rear bulkhead and go through the brackets as mentioned above. It does mean they twist through 90 degrees but they seem to work fine.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I have a hardtop and had all the brackets and bits but couldn't figure out where the inertia reel fitted.
I thought it had to be DIRECTLY below the other mount to work properly. If it was there it would foul the seat backs.
I've got the idea now though. :)
Thank you again, much appreciated.
