Garage for engine swap on Series 3
« on: March 06, 2014, 07:42:18 PM »
Can anybody recommend a garage in the Glasgow / Central Scotland for doing any engine swap on a Series 3? Looking to go from a 2.25 to 2.5NAD.

Thanks,

Euan

You could try A Storry 4x4 near Shotts, not sure if he works myuch with series motors but he is good. GEMM in falkirk got a good name too.

What about doing it yourself? Its not a particularly tricky swap.

Sadly I don't have a garage / workshop / driveway so I'd have to have the parts lying out in the street. Tried GEMM but the reply was put a 200/300tdi in it with a 5 speed box / permanent 4wd. I should have mentioned its a 24V FFR, so the electrics are not simple and the 90Amp generator takes up a lot of room. Hence wanting to go down the 2.5NAD route.

Ah ok fair dos. If I had one myself I would offer to help (I'm at Carluke) but if/until I move house in the next month that wont be possible.

I'm not 100% up on the FFR's, are all the engine electrics, lights etc running 24V?

Is it petrol or diesel at the moment?

The 2.25 starter will fit the 2.5, things like water temp switches, glow plugs etc can all be transferred so should be ok. Do you have a 12V dropper because the stop solenoid feed could be taken from there.

It would appear that with the right spacer, no alterations are needed to the chassis

Currently its petrol and its addicted to the stuff! Everything is 24V except the ignition which is 12V. The main reason for changing is better MPG and the fact I'm happier fixing and maintaining diesels than petrols. It's getting hard to find a garage who knows about carbs these days.

A 24V starter can sourced from a Dutch diesel lightweight. The gauges are capillary, but I believe you can get adaptors for the senders.

Going to see Gibson Autos on Saturday. Got a reply to my email enquiry saying we'd prefer to fit a 200/300 tdi but if you want a 2.5NAD we'll do it.

Hi there's a garage out at Blackburn called if I remember right diesel jocks and have heard they do all that sort of work also I'm on process of doing a swap on my S3 but its 2 1/4 for a 2 1/4 and just got space to do it myself and its quite straight forward but yours is 24v which if undertaken should be same bar the electrics will need sorted out but not a big problem once you have the nessary info on it, I would offer but I'm at month four of trying as I have medical probs otherwise I would say drive it up with the engine in back and I would do it for you
Anyways give diesel jocks a shout they may just surprise you cost wise and added advantage is they really know there stuff.

I just had a gearbox fitted by Marks garage at Wallyford, really nice people and excellent quality of service.

Might be a bit far away from you but always worth travelling for good service.

Thanks for all the replies. Gibsons were keen to put a 200tdi in it despite me explaining I didn't want one. They also said that to do so would mean converting to 12V as there wasn't enough room for the generator. Converting to 12V would double the price as it isn't as straightforward as swapping the bulbs as they thought - you have to chop out a large part of the wiring room (shunt and rectifier boxes) for a start.

One of the reasons for going for the 2.5NAD is that fitting the 24V kit is easy.

I'll be contacting the other suggestions on Monday.

I can heartily recommend either Shug, or Lenny at LCS in Helensburgh.

Looks like it will be going to Mark's Garage for a 200Di to be fitted, keeping the 24V equipment.

Thanks for all your suggestions,

Euan
