aux heater for defender
« on: November 06, 2013, 10:36:31 PM »
Was in girlfriends fiesta this morning, and noticed the heater is almost instantly hot on start up . Just browsing on internet and apparently hybrid cars have PTC heaters built in to the normal car heating system as they tend to run cooler. Effectively an electric hair dryer, got a link from a VW website on retro fitting a OEM PTC heater in to a VW.

Could a simular set up work? Could this be the future for the Defender no more waiting 10mins for warmth ?

The spec says 12 / 24 v AC
is this a typo?

Going to proper research this as the golf from the link above has a 1KW heating element which sounds like the ticket, might end up salvage yard bound once I find a suitable unit in a car which will fit in the heater box.

I' m guessing the A.C was wrong as thats going to be awkward to power.

Wont need an inverter.
It is an PTC Thermistor element,  it will run on both ac and dc, it will however draw slightly more power from the supply on dc.

Anyone know the dimensions of a defender heater matrix and if there is any space inside heater box, is there any between orignal matrix and outlet on box to bulkhead, searching on ebay with electric heater matrix and some second hand units are £25

Cheers Dave was thinking of a slot with welded 2x C-channel to slide electric matrix in from the side, to be in behind original water matrix.
