What is the tightest nut on a Defender ?
« on: April 10, 2013, 11:26:23 PM »
Previously thought the tightest nut on a Defender was the front crankshaft pulley retaining bolt,271 Nm but have now found a new contender, the 32mm nut holding  5th gear on the layshaft of an R380 gearbox,a whopping 350Nm. I had to fabricate a tool to hold against the gear with a metre of 20mm round bar as the handle. Suffice to say, it bent before the nut eventually came off.

The tightest nut on my Defender is always the last one to take off in any given job I'm about to do (usually the most awkward one too)!!!  :P

Drop arm nut is not so tight,176Nm, its the taper spline that is a pain to remove.

It is alleged that the tightest nut on my defender is the one behind the steering wheel. Most unkind!
