Does anyone have a farm jack cluttering up the shed in exchange for beer vouchers? Recent experience of changing a wheel on a hill, on wet cobbles, convinces me I could make use of one.

Hmmmm. On a hill, on wet cobbles is not a good spot for a farm jack either ! Not the most stable way to lift a landy. A 3 or 4 Tonne Bottle jack and a bit of board as a "spreader" base will be easier to stow and more stable in action. ( Elf and Safety...)

My choice would be 3 ton trolley jack. Chock the front or rear wheels securely with proper chocks
tied to the wheels
. Chock as many wheels as you can.
When she rises the chocks will help hold her. Rather than axle stands on hill I use railway sleeper cut into 14 inch blocks. Fire her into low box and in gear too.

get yourself down to the scrappy and find a bottle jack from a disco, its got a nice hook on top that fits the axle of a series/defender nicely, should be loads out there, for much cheapness!!!!
