Break calliper bolts
« on: October 20, 2012, 06:00:34 PM »
Aye, it always seems like the simplest of jobs that do you in!

Front off-side wheel bearing has gone. Bought the bits and went to do the job today. I can't for love nor money get the 2 bolts that hold the calliper undone. They just don't seem to fit onto any of my sockets. I have read that they are 13mm (or 1/2") and that a hex socket will grip them. I've tried 13mm & 1/2" hex & 12 point 1/2", none of them have any joy. The size up sometimes fits but slips (not good!).

Is there a special tool (or an I being a tool!?)? I know that they are in tight, I managed to get the bottom one out by tapping a 1/2" 12 point onto to, it then took me 1 1/2 hours to prise them apart again (and didn't do the bolt much good). The top one is not for moving at all.

Any hints would be very welcome.

It's a 1993 90. 200 Tdi (drums on back).

Thanks in advance
Jamie

Having had same problem before, one way was to hammer on a slightly smaller socket or place a nut over the outside of the chewed bolt and weld it on, what I have now is a set of extractor sockets,(think easy-out but in a socket) you hammer it on and the internal left hand thread teeth bite in and hopefully turn the bolt. The origional bolts are 12 point bi-hex 13mm socket.Always fit new bolts as well, reusing an old rusted bolt now results in the same problem another day!

Thanks chaps - it would seem that my original technique might have been the correct one!!

Stage Recovery is this the kind of thing you mean? http://www.irwin.com/tools/screw-bolt-extractors/bolt-extractors

If its the same as mine some PITA had used threadlock on them in a previous life. Took a fully equipped landrover specialist garage 3 hours per side to get them undone, and I know the effort it took because I stood there holding spanners all damn day !

Lesson from this one - Don't use threadlock unless the book says so !
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

There is another way! if its just the hub thats needed to be removed, split the caliper.Just needs rebuilt and bled, make sure the bleed nipple unscrews first!

The book does say so on these bolts. (does in mine anyway)
She said at my age I need something else to play with
