It's a Disco box that's in mine... from what I can tell from fitting it only the bell housing and support brace are different because it fit straight on mine - even the transfer box was a straight swap!

yeh but on a disco box the gearstick is in the wrong place when fitted to a defender, so if you build hybrid box the gearstick then comes in the right place
Started out with nothing,
Still have most of it left

true I forgot about that. I quite like it being further back to be honest, it's alot easier to use and feel a bit more car-like

i was refering to the long lt77's & long R380's

not a shorty lt77

I'm lost lol

I was under the impression the boxes are essentially the same, but a disco and short stick RR classic have longer bellhousings and the gearstick comes straight out the top of the box. On a defender it has a shorter bellhousing (and input shaft??) as along with the long stick RRC they have a remote selctor housing on the top of the bot which places the gear stick forwards someway.

When I fitted the R380 to mine it needed a shorter bell housing. Couldn't tell you about the shaft as Gemm 4x4 did the conversion. I liked the stick being further back so just left it back there and mad a new top for the tunnel out of checkerplate

Yeah the hi/lo lever on a disco is at the front but on a defender it is the other way round. I have done this conversion two or three times now, and my preference is to fit complete disco box ( Bell housing and all) as when you cut away the strengthening bar to allow fitments the drive position is so much more comfortable. I believe but maybe wrong that the only difference between the two are 1. the gearbox housing (all internals are the same and transferable) 2. The disco transferbox has a 1.2 and 1.4 final drive which if you drive alot of road miles is actually better and 3. as already discussed the length  of the bell housing is different.
Obviously this may not be 100% but im sure not to far away lol,

The guy that fitted mine thought that the transfer box was the same in both... what you have said would certainly explain why mine felt like the gearing went a bit taller. It cruises on the motorway nice now where before it sounded like the revs were quite high

All bellhousing's are gearbox specific,,, although some can be interchanged (refered to as the short belhousing), so as mention prev tdi box(r38) on a defender is exactlly the same as discovery, allbiet the defender is has the shift remote further forward (refered to as the long stick) and the disco is right in the top of the gearbox (refered to as the short stick) which is infuriating because you would think that it would be simple as removing the the remote shift and adding it to a disco box for to be able to interchange them,  but no that was too simple for landrover,,,,,, ::) the only gearing difference is in the transfer box,

Yeah thought that, as i said the driving position is far better as well. I would have thought through road mileage you would get better fuel
economy obv depending on how you drive it lol. Another advantage i find also is when the box packs in again lol disco boxes complete are
ten a penny
