Insurance - off road cover
« on: September 24, 2011, 12:59:23 PM »
My insurance is due for my SIII SWB, and I have limited mileage (3000 miles pa) classic policy with Sureterm Direct.  The basic premium is about ?150, and then with legal aid, and roadside recovery takes it to about ?200, which is okay but I will shop around before I accept it.

The cover includes off road cover for greenlaning etc, but excludes any competitive off road driving.  So I am not covered for a Tyro.  Is this usual, or do many of you have off road cover, and if so who is it with?

I am sure I have seen other policies that cover for off road/Tyro/RTV, as long as it is not a timed event, ie racing is excluded.

Cheers
Clive

Hopefully someone that was involved last time this was raised can point you in the right direction for cover.

Your Club/MSA membership will/may give you 3rd party cover against claims when signed on at events in non competitive/speed events & when marshalling.
(check that with the club)

Even when you have 'offroad cover' on your road policy look at the 'Exclusions' in the policy,
it possibly says something like 'offroad courses' & ground',

Greenlane/Greenroad will mean a public highway often, not a private non Public road/Highway.
It needs to also be cover for being on, 'Private land' or Private land open to the public which you have permission to be on for leisure/private not work related.

much the same policy on offer as from Sureterm Direct or other Brokers because the cover comes from the same
companies, KGM Motor Insurance or whoever.

Check what they offer & get it in writing you can not just take what the Broker or call centre person says or offers..

Check with Adrian Flux, I'm doing MudMaster and I have been told I' covered for this. Just not speed trials.
My classic policy is also with them and considerably cheaper than your mention price.

Could you both just look in your 'poilcy' at 'General Exclusions'.
(& at your Certificate of Insurance)
Just to see if it reads anything like this.
(just because as i said in the last post, what is often told to you, is not what the policy covers you for)

2 years ago i got a full refund on a policy that turned out to read like the one below.

I have in my hand a current 'Classic Policy',
(this suited the vehicle that i bought the insurance for & cost ?147 without use of a NCB)

'Specialist Vehicle Policy Document'. Provided by KGM Motor Insurance.
page 23, 'general Exclusions' Use and Drivers.

"we will not pay for any loss, damage or liability caused in any of the following circumstances whilst your vehicle is being used, driven or in the charge of."

"i. For a purpose not specified or permitted on your Certificate of Insurance.
ii. In any race, rally, competition, trial, or similar motoring event.
iii. On any race, rally, test circuit or any off-road course or ground."

A bit off topic, But how old does a vehicle need to be to qualify for  classic car insurance.

Would have to say that it is just a term 'they' use that does not refer to older vehicles.

I have a first registered 2006 & a 2003 that are insured with declared modifications & for use offroad.
(I do not ever expect to claim for an incident that i cause to damage my vehicle, i do want covered for any one claiming for damage or injury i might cause)

The policy that was then sent to me was a 'Classic Policy',

has the same wording exactly as when the policy i held was called an
'Off Road Policy'
& covered a 1992 Land Rover for 2 years then on the 3rd it became a Classic Policy.

Has anyone ever had to make an insurance claim for their vehicle damaged Off Road because of driver error & away from the Public road?

What did you draw on the 'Scene of Incident' drawing & explanation you submitted if there were no junctions or road markings & no other vehicle involved?
Did you get a pay out?

I will check the black & white, but I did phone up Adrian Flux and ask the specific question as per the regulations of mudmaster.
Interesting points though.

Classic Policy, depends on the insurance underwriters. As I understand it, you can't get it for your main car. My neighbours car is only 10years old.  Both our daily drives are older than this. Wish we could get classic on all 3 cars  or afford a new car  :D

After having had a Traders Policy & no longer qualifying, i had Multi Car with Admiral, it worked out very well but requires full payment on purchase, or did.

Now that i am over 50,
'Saga' is wonderful for unmodified family cars, this includes Road going only 4x4's.

Requires to be a couple really for the best price,
& you need to get them to give best price, keep on to get it down & get a price.

'Then', First time that can be made cheaper by taking a Quote for home insurance 5% discount,
Quote for Health insurance another 5% discount,
Holiday Insurance quote another 5% discount on the already good price.
(can take a couple of hours on the phone, ;D but quite a saving & not many people can get ?100 an hour in wages, so worth the time taken i would think)

NCB goes across to both vehicles for you as a couple, & there are some other really good perks to the cover.

Renewal prices are stupid, but then they 'Price Match' other quotes you have had from online comparison sites etc.
A law unto theirselfs, just like every other Company or Broker.
Plenty of customers take what they are offered in the way of quotes,
so leave bargains for others. ;)

Just never asume the position, it might hurt.

Aye, always advisable to check the small print-especially Adrian Flux.

I had the Goddess on a classic policy with AF, and even though the small print read no speed trials..blah...blah, when i questioned it for GRR and tyro's, and challenged them on the small print, it turned out, that on a classic policy, i couldnt even drive it into a field!!!!!! Needless to say, i changed my policy. Got a good quote from Lancaster.  :)
