advice please, on hiring a trailer & towing
« on: June 06, 2011, 10:04:10 AM »
HI All,

I probably should have asked this before bidding on ebay!! I've just won a 109 up in the dornach area (I'm nr. Glasgow/ Stirling).

Does anyone know if there is somewhere to hire a trailer in my area so that I can pick the 109 up. Also, and this is the rub; is it legal to tow this behind my standard 200tdi 90 (year 1994).

Cheers,
Jamie

Aye, my license covers me to tow a trailer (I assume that I don't need a special endorsement to cover me for a "heavy" trailer). I regularly have to tow kayak/ canoe trailers for my work with mini buses (D1 + E) and have trailers cover with my "car" license.

Indespension in Milngavie do trailer hire if that's any use to you location wise.

BTW, if that's the bronze green one I seen on the bay then it looks like a decent find. An ebay overdrive alone can go for more.

Thanks for this Milgnagvie would be ideal (I'll be storing the vehicle in Aberfoyle). And, aye -- that's the one! Overdrive & capstan winch -- gotta be worth it and the effort of collection.

Does anyone know (and I suppose the trailer hire people might tell me) if the trailer needs to have brakes and how all that works (eg how does my LR control the trailer braking). I have a standard tow bar and electric set up.

I'd just give them a call they are the experts and will advise you on what you can/can't do. All you should need though is a towball and standard electric connector for the trailer lights. The braking is handled within the trailers drawbar and independent of your cars braking system.
