Wanted - 110 V8 viscous fan cowling
« on: March 25, 2011, 05:17:45 PM »
Hi,

As is says, don't think the electric fan is good enough for a 4.6 in heavy traffic.
I've got a fan, just need the cowling.

cheers

Geoff,
you may find that the 'Temperature Sender'
& the 'Temperature Gauge' (Tdi) are a mismatch.
Is the engine actually getting as hot as the Temperature gauge indicates?

Originally when i first got it & was concerned i used 'Water Wetter' in the coolant system as a quick temporary measure,
Then i found that the temperature in the system wasnt actually that high,
certainly not what the gauge showed when going into the red..
(so drained it & used it elsewhere ;))

A better gearbox oil cooler might also be worth while.

What fan setup do you have? Ideally it should be a twin 13in one.

EDIT: George emailed me some pics of the engine bay from when he had the car. It looks like a single 16in fan on there, it should be more than adequate to cool it. I have seen a P38 with the single fan on a 4.6 and it was fine. My own car (3.5 V8) has a single 13in peugeot fan clipped to the rad, no cowling or anything. It is easily kept cool enough even withonly one of the tubular manifolds being heat wrapped.

As George says above, has the engine actually got too hot?

It is a 16" fan that's fitted, so I've shifted it over to the nearside of the radiator and fitted two 8" fans beside it, one above the other, fed through a relay from a switch on the dashboard. Tried it yesterday and the 16" fan keeps it cool till I stop/slow in traffic. Then I just switch the two 8" fans on and they keep it down till I'm mobile again. Seems fine.
I was going to sell it, but since I glued carpet on the back seat boxes it looks quite good in the back.
George, it's no longer a camper van!! I'm thinking of boxing in the gas tank next.
Geoff :)
