Conversion options
« on: March 24, 2011, 06:30:08 PM »
Hi guys,

My 19J has finally decided that it has had enough, so i'm trying to weigh up my options.  The easy option is to drop a 200tdi into it..............but that would be the easy option.

I quite fancy a v8 as it only gets used as a toy these days and there's nothing like a v8 rumble, is this a worthwhile conversion or would sticking  a 300tdi in be the better option?

Not looked at any other manufacturers engines mazda, daihatsu etc?

Not wanting to spend the earth but it needs to work!

Any advice/ experience appreciated,

Robin

Hi
Just done a 300tdi convertion on my 19j. Straight forward just change the engine mounts. If you use the steve parker ones they bolt on to the bulkhead support brackets on your chassis so no mockup needed just find a welder and weld em on in place. use your 19j flywheel housing adaptor then no mucking about drilling and tapping bolt holes for the gearbox to fit on. 200tdi needs a special downpipe exaust if disco engine the 300tdi can use a factory 300tdi downpipe. Both engines need oil and power steering pipes extended. No extra wiring use your full 19j loom. elecy fan required as the engines sit way back in the engine bay.
V8 only if you want the hassle of an enginners report and letting the dvla know ok if a trailer to and from type of toy.
I loved my 19j engine but needed more toeing power otherwise id have kept it.

scott - why an engineers report ? surely you have to do the same with the 300tdi ......

also - was it a defender 300tdi or a disco 300tdi

im in a similar position right now ! - 200tdis going for silly money and 300tdis with lower milage are cheaper. - whats the cut off for the ones with more electronics - 96 or 97 ?
`87 ninety - full rebuild with 11l 200tdi conversion ,2 inch lift and 13 inch shocks and relevent protection/sliders./ dislocation cones

Goes like a stabbed rat.

Dunno about an engineers report - but whatever engine you swap in you're supposed to change the details with DVLA - the V5 records the engine no. which could help stop ringers and vehicle theft in general ?
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

Dont get to focused on the tdi's a gassed v8 is very viable and very probably the way i would go but i enjoy deep puddles too much for a petrol,,

I only ever heard you need a engineers report as a V8 is petrol so your changing the factory fuel spec of the motor. 200 and 300 still come under a 2.5td as such its just your insurance that needs to know. Its all i was adviced anyways and insurance said nothing about informing the dvla.No change in price to my policys either as they class it at similar replacment engine.
Your wiring loom will run both the 200 and 300 with only a few plugs changed.
Personaly id go for the 300tdi more refined engine than the 200 and only mounts to change not a hard job. I did get someone to weld my mounts on.

Thanks, I think I'll take heed and go for a 300tdi.  Need to raise some funds now!!
