Bonnet Mounted Spare Wheel
« on: November 21, 2010, 09:18:42 PM »
Appreciate your views on the pro's & con's of mounting a spare wheel on a Defender bonnet.  I imagine it'll make the bonnet more difficult (ie heavier) to open, but is this an issue.  What about visibility - how much difference does this make?

Cheers,

Hi there I have my spare on the bonnet when opening the bonnet it takes two hands to pull the catch as for blocking the view it does not really affect me because I am tall but does affect my wife greatly because she is not as tall and she says she could not park my landy because of how much it blocks her view just as well she has her own car brido :)

I grew up with a bonnet mounted spare, passed my test with one. To me the front looks bare without it !

Pro - it saves space inside or stops the rear door frame and hinges getting gubbed....and its iconic ! If towing its easier to get at the hitch.
Anti - as you say, heavier to lift the bonnet, but not impossibly so. You need to look farther ahead and remember whats in front.

I've deliberately converted both of my last Defenders from door mounted spares. Both doors, upon inspection , had cracked frames.....

If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

Thanks for your views.  To be honest, it is more for looks - your right, the bonnet kinda looks bear without it.  I guess I'll need to get a bracket to mount it now!!

Mine's on a swing away carrier on rear of my truck.

I prefer it on the bonnet for looks-ive since put a mascot on!!

But for my own safety, i took it off-didnt fancy it coming down on my head if i dropped it. One advantage of it being on the back-if large vans take a dislike to you >:(  and shunt you off the road-saves your truck from getting demolished!!

I guess I'll need to get a bracket to mount it now!!

Might be a bit more than that involved.

In the days Land Rover fitted wheels to the bonnets of Series Land Rovers, there was a lot of strengthening built into the bonnet, plus more substantial hinges, and a "dish" in the LWB bonnet to take a bit off the height of the wheel.

Stuart the front spare on my 109 and project 88 sit in a dish, and though it feels you are sitting lower down in the 109 with the narrower tyre you just  dont really notice it....well I dont

Cheers,

The official LR kit was what I fitted. ( G reg Turbo D bonnet ) Comes with two angled bits of u channel which strengthen the central ribs of the bonnet, the central plate with the sticky up bits the wheel bolts down to and the 4 rubber buffers that the wheel sits on, plus the plate that holds the wheel down.

Probably best to look for a scrap bonnet to rob the bits off, the parts new are not cheap !

Ok, might have to source a second hand bonnet for the brackets!! I was also looking at the 'swing away' type bracket for the rear, but they're about ?125.00 new.  Bonnet mounted is the best bet, if only for the looks.
